More Than Meets the Stance

Did you know that there is more to a golf stance than meets the eye? All golf pros know that one doesn’t simply “stand” there and swing away even with callaway golf clubs

In fact, many a golfer tends to overlook this seemingly insignificant detail. Oftentimes, players think that tone simply stands up, spreads his legs a bit and that it. What they don’t realise however, is that games are won or lost because of a good or poor stance, respectively.

What’s more, your body is subject to a lot of physical strain. This is due to the rather peculiar position one normally takes when setting up for a shot. And you have to repeat this several times, over a typical 18-hole golf course. Do remember that this lasts roughly five hours. It may look easy. But believe us, it isn’t.

This is why golfers are always advised to take a good look at their stance. Are they doing it the proper way? Are they subjecting themselves to severe physical injury without even knowing it? And how will it affect their game?

Here are a few pointers for a proper golf stance:

-          The first thing one needs to remember is to bend a bit in order to “address” that golf ball. The “bending point” should be your hips. This allows you to relax a bit while trying to hit that ball. Moreover, it lessens the strain on your back and spinal area. A bit of muscle strength and flexibility is required here.

-          You cannot bend properly however without flexing your knees bit. This allows you greater flexibility and control. It likewise helps you reach the ball better. Just make sure not to bend too much lest you start to loose your balance. Moreover, it looks rather awkward.

-          By the same token, the ankles likewise need to be flexed. This allows you to balance all that weight better. And it puts less strain on all the upper body parts, especially the bended ones. Just make sure to loosen up those calf muscles. Tight calf muscles tend to be a bit uncomfortable.

-          We’ve been talking a lot about bending.  One area you should avoid bending is your back. Yes, that’s right. Bend everything else except your back. Keeping it as upright as possible can give you longer drives and ultimately, better results.

So take the time to practise that golf stance. Getting it right can actually have a tremendous impact on your game. Good luck!
